Doomsday: COVID-19 Ain’t It

COVID-19 news reports look and sound a lot like the beginning of many zombie and contagion pandemic movies. The similarities are uncanny; life imitates art. But unlike those movies that are designed to induce fear, the level of fear and panic shopping for this pandemic is an overreaction. That’s not to say we shouldn’t heed warnings and follow guidelines to keep us safe, but depleting the toilet paper supply is not the remedy.

The number one preventative measure for COVID-19 is to wash your hands. And that says a lot. We shouldn’t have to tell adults to properly wash their hand and much worse, to wash them, period. I have witnessed many adults leave restrooms without washing their hands. And COVID-19 highlights the lack of sanitary practices in places we frequent. We are seeing a lot of places clean and sanitize things that we’ve never seen before. And that draws attention to the fact that these things may never have been thoroughly cleaned before.

For as much as we don’t know about COVID-19, there’s a lot we do know.

From the CDC

Older adults and people who have severe underlying medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness.

Know How it Spreads

  • There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
  • The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus.
  • The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.
    • Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
    • Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
  • These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

We Will Make It

It has been a rough few weeks and we still have more to go, but we will make it through. With the confirmed cases and deaths rapidly growing, we must focus on minimizing our chances of contracting COVID-19. When it comes to firearm safety, we treat every firearm as if it were loaded. For COVID-19, let’s treat every hand as if it were infected.
